Poker MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) Calculator

Enter pot and bet size to calculate MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) and alpha for free. See how often you need to defend so pure bluffs don't print.

What is MDF?

MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) is how often you must continue (call or raise) so pure bluffs don't profit automatically. Larger bets need less defense; smaller bets need more. It is a GTO-minded starting point for defense.

Formulas

  • If bet size is fraction b of the pot, MDF = 1 / (1 + b)
  • Alpha (bluff break-even frequency) = b / (1 + b) = 1 − MDF
  • Example: pot 100, bet 50 (b=0.5) → MDF ≈ 66.7%, alpha ≈ 33.3%

Result

MDF—

Defending at this frequency or higher makes opponent's bluffs unprofitable

Required Bluff Success Rate (α)—

Minimum success rate required for a profitable bluff

Pot Odds—

Minimum equity required to call

Recommended range composition

Value

Bluff
—

Theoretically optimal value bet to bluff ratio

How to use

  1. Enter the current pot size.
  2. Set the opponent's bet (or raise) size as a percentage of the pot.
  3. MDF, pot odds, and alpha appear. Use them as guides for defense and bluff frequency.

Usage tips

  • MDF is a theoretical floor. Live defense width still depends on opponent value/bluff mix and board texture.
  • Smaller bets need higher MDF. Example: 1/3 pot → ~75%, pot-sized bet → 50%.
  • Against a raise, compute alpha from risk and reward, then MDF = 1 − alpha.
  • Calculation runs entirely in your browser. Numbers you enter are not sent to the server.

FAQ

Is the MDF calculator free?
Yes. This MDF calculator is free and works without an account.
How are MDF and pot odds related?
MDF and alpha are complements (MDF = 1 − alpha). Pot odds, by contrast, are the minimum equity required to call and are a separate metric from MDF.
If I defend exactly at MDF, will I win?
MDF is a lower bound so pure bluffs don't print. Real hand selection also depends on range construction, equity realization, and position.
Can I calculate MDF against a raise?
Yes. Switch bet type to raise and enter the opponent's raise size.
