Rejoining after closing the app mid-hand could show the exit screen and keep you from getting a new table.
If you reopened Fast Fold mid-hand, a timeout that happened while you were away could trigger the exit screen and keep sending you back to the same table.
Timeouts that happen while you're away or the app is in the background no longer queue an exit, so you can keep playing when you return.
