Outs
Basic Definition
In poker, "outs" refer to the cards needed to improve your current hand and beat your opponent. Specifically, it involves calculating the number of cards remaining in the deck that can complete or strengthen your hand.
Specific Situation
- With the flop showing A72 and your hole cards being KQ, there are 9 spade cards remaining that can complete a spade flush, so you have 9 outs.
- With a flop of Q85 and a hand of JT, drawing a 9 would complete a straight, so there are 4 outs (the four 9s remaining in the deck).
Important Information
- By accurately counting your outs, you can calculate pot odds and winning percentages, which helps you decide your next action (call, raise, or fold).
- When counting outs, it's important to consider the potential hands your opponent might complete and the possibility that you could still lose even if you draw.
Examples of Term Usage
"If you can draw an out on the river, you'll complete a flush, so calling isn't a bad idea."
