Straight draw

Basic Definition

A straight draw refers to a situation where you are one card away from completing a straight. In this state, if a card of a specific rank appears next, your hand will be complete.

Specific Situation

  • With a flop of 872 and a hand of 65, a 9 would complete a straight. This is called an open-ended straight draw.
  • With a flop of K95 and a hand of 76, an 8 would complete a straight. This is called a gutshot straight draw.

Important Information

  • There are two types of straight draws: the "open-ended straight draw," which can be completed at either end, and the "gutshot straight draw," which is missing just one card. The open-ended straight draw has a higher probability of being completed.
  • A situation where there are two gutshots is sometimes called a double belly buster.

Examples of Term Usage

"Since the straight draw completed on the turn, we should go for a value bet here."
