Basic Definition

A 3-bet (re-raise) in poker refers to making an additional raise after the initial raise.

Specific Situation

  • In the preflop, when the BTN (button) makes an open raise of 2.5BB and the BB (big blind) responds with a re-raise to 10BB, the BB's action is considered a 3-bet.
  • In post-flop play, when Player A raises on the flop and Player B makes another raise in response, this is also called a "3-bet."

Important Information

  • A 3-bet usually indicates a strong hand, but it can also be used as a bluff. It should be employed strategically, taking into account the opponent's player type and position.
  • The size of a 3-bet pre-flop depends on the situation, but typically it is set to about three times the opponent's raise when in position (IP) and about four times when out of position (OOP). Choosing the appropriate size can put pressure on your opponent.

Examples of Term Usage

"I had AK preflop, so I made a 3-bet to 9BB against the UTG open raise."
