Bad beat
Basic Definition
A bad beat refers to a situation in poker where a hand with a very high chance of winning unexpectedly loses due to an improbable turn of events.
Specific Situation
- Holding AA and completing a top set on a flop of A82, you lose when your opponent, holding 76, completes a straight with a turn and river of 9T.
- On the flop, I held A5 and made the nut flush with a board of KQ9, but my opponent completed a full house with Q9 when the turn brought Q.
Important Information
- A bad beat is something that can occur probabilistically and is a result of luck, not skill. It's important to accept this calmly.
- Due to being susceptible to emotional damage, it is important to control your emotions when experiencing a bad beat and ensure it doesn't affect the next hand.
Examples of Term Usage
"The bad beat earlier was really tough, but let's switch gears and focus on the next one."
