Block bet

★★

Basic Definition

A block bet is a strategy in poker where you make a smaller bet first to prevent your opponent from making a large bet. It is used when you are out of position (OOP).

Specific Situation

  • When facing an aggressive player from the flop to the river, making a block bet from out of position on the river can reduce the likelihood of being bluffed into folding by preventing a large bet.
  • By making a small bet when you have a draw, you can see the next card with a low investment, preventing your opponent from making a large bet.

Important Information

  • A block bet is effective when your hand is of medium strength or you have a draw, and it's useful in situations where you would have to fold if the opponent makes a large bet.
  • If a raise comes back against a block bet, it's generally best to fold unless the odds for your draw are favorable.

Examples of Term Usage

"I made a block bet to control the pot and prevent my opponent from making a large bet on the river."
