Bluff

Basic Definition

A bluff is a play in poker where you bet or raise despite having a weak hand, aiming to make your opponent fold.

Specific Situation

  • When the flop is A72 and your hand is 96, if the opponent checks, you bet more than half the pot to make it look like you have a strong hand.
  • If the board shows QT924 and your hand is J8, aim to bluff all-in to make your opponent fold if they make a weak-looking move.

Important Information

  • If a bluff is successful, you can win the pot, but if it fails, the losses can be significant. You should proceed cautiously, taking into account your opponent's playing style and position.
  • If your opponent is a "calling station" (a player who tends to call even with weak hands), it's wise to avoid bluffing as it is less effective.
  • If you never bluff, your opponents will always fold when you have a strong hand, making it difficult to profit. It's important to bluff at the right frequency.

Examples of Term Usage

"Since the opponent is a tight player, let's try bluffing on the final river."
