Calling station

☆☆

Basic Definition

A calling station refers to a player who frequently calls. This type of player tends to call even in situations where they should ideally fold or raise, making it easier to extract value from them.

Specific Situation

  • With a flop of AhKd8s and holding AdQs, if you make an over-pot-sized bet, a calling station player might call with a hand like 6c6d, which they should normally fold.
  • Even if you try to bluff on the river, a calling station might call with a weak pair or high card.

Important Information

  • Bluffs are less effective against calling stations, so it's effective to reduce the frequency of bluffs and instead increase your bet size with strong hands to actively make value bets.
  • A strategy that takes advantage of their frequent calling by increasing the bet size to maximize value is effective.

Examples of Term Usage

"He's a calling station, so let's hold back on bluffs and focus on making more value bets."
