Cover
★★☆
Basic Definition
In poker, "cover" refers to having a chip count that exceeds or is at least equal to your opponent's chip count. This means you have enough chips to call if your opponent goes all-in.
Specific Situation
- If you have 5,000 chips and your opponent has 3,000 chips, you are "covering" your opponent. In this situation, even if your opponent goes all-in, you can call and still have chips left over.
- If you have 2,000 chips and your opponent has 5,000 chips, you are "covered" by your opponent. If you lose an all-in showdown, you will lose all your chips.
Important Information
- When you are covered, you can respond to your opponent's all-in with a full stack. This gives you the chance to win their entire stack.
- If you're covered, even if the opponent goes all-in, you can only call with part of your stack because you don't have enough. As a result, you might not be able to maximize the value of your hand.
Examples of Term Usage
"I'm covering my opponent, so even if I go all-in here, I won't be eliminated."
