Dominate
Basic Definition
In poker, "dominate" refers to a situation where one hand has an overwhelming advantage over another. This term is especially used when hands contain the same rank but differ in the strength of the kicker (the second card).
Specific Situation
- With my hand being AQ and the opponent's hand being AK, my winning probability is only about 25%, and I'm in a dominated position.
- When considering individual hands, AQ is a stronger hand than QJ, but QJ has a higher win rate against AK. In this way, when two hands contain cards of the same rank and there is a difference in the rank of the other card, a significant difference in win rate occurs, leading to domination.
Important Information
- Be cautious with hands that have a weak kicker, as they are likely to be dominated. If your hand is dominated, you might not be able to fold after making a pair, which could lead to a significant loss of chips.
Examples of Term Usage
"I was dealt AQ pre-flop and went all-in, but got called by a dominating AK."
