Drawing dead
Basic Definition
In poker, "drawing dead" refers to a situation where no matter what card you draw, your hand cannot improve to win. In other words, it occurs when your opponent's hand is already guaranteed to win.
Specific Situation
- When the flop is AKQ and your hole cards are JT, you are drawing dead against an opponent with a flush, as completing your straight won't allow you to win.
- On a board where a flush is possible, a straight draw, or on a board where a full house is possible, a flush draw might be drawing dead.
Important Information
- In a drawing dead situation, no matter how strong a card you draw, there's no chance of winning, so it's important to avoid unnecessary betting.
- Accurately guessing your opponent's hand and recognizing early on that you might be drawing dead is key to minimizing losses.
Examples of Term Usage
"If the opponent has nuts, we're completely drawing dead."
