Early position

Basic Definition

Early Position (EP) refers to the position of players who act first in the pre-flop phase. Specifically, it includes about three seats to the left of the big blind (e.g., UTG, UTG+1, UTG+2).

Specific Situation

  • At a 9-player table, if your seat is UTG (Under the Gun), you must decide your action first pre-flop.
  • In early position, since all subsequent players can act after seeing your action, it's necessary to play cautiously with strong hands.

Important Information

  • In an early position, since there are many players who will act after you, participating with a weak hand is likely to put you at a disadvantage.
  • By focusing on playing strong hands (e.g., AK, QQ, etc.), you can mitigate the disadvantage of your position.

Examples of Term Usage

"I raised with AK from early position, but depending on the board, I need to play carefully."
