EV

★★Expected value

Basic Definition

EV (Expected Value) in poker is a numerical representation of the average profit (or loss) expected when taking a specific action. In Japanese, it is called "kitaichi" (期待値). EV is used to analyze which choices are most advantageous from a long-term perspective.

Specific Situation

  • If you have Ah2h and the flop is QhJh6h, you have completed the nut flush. In this situation, if your opponent bets, the expected value (EV) of raising with a nut hand is considered very high, and raising can maximize your long-term profit.
  • When you have 9d8d and the turn is 7d6h2s3c, you have an open-ended straight draw. Determine the size of the expected value (EV) when calling an opponent's bet based on pot odds and implied odds.

Important Information

  • EV serves as the foundation for logically constructing poker strategies. By combining it with calculations of pot odds and outs, you can choose the optimal action.
  • In the short term, results may not align with EV, but by continuing to play over the long term, actions based on EV are more likely to yield profits.

Examples of Term Usage

"If the EV is positive in this situation, you should raise to further increase the pot."
