Family pot
★☆☆
Basic Definition
A family pot in poker refers to a pot in which many players are participating. Since many players see the flop, the likelihood of a specific player winning the pot is reduced.
Specific Situation
- Everyone called pre-flop, and the big blind (BB) checked, resulting in everyone at the table seeing the flop.
- Everyone at the table saw the flop after everyone called the under-the-gun open raise.
Important Information
- In a family pot, since you are playing against multiple players, the likelihood of someone having a stronger hand than yours is higher compared to heads-up play.
- Since many players are involved in the pot, position (the order of action) becomes particularly important. Players in later positions have the advantage of easily gaining information.
Examples of Term Usage
"This table has a lot of limping, so it tends to become a family pot."
