Fish

☆☆

Basic Definition

In poker, the term "fish" is slang for a player with low skill and underdeveloped strategic play. Generally, they are recognized as opponents from whom chips can be easily taken at the poker table. The opposite term is "shark," which refers to a highly skilled and experienced player.

Specific Situation

  • Players who join too often with weak hands just because they want to play can be considered fish.
  • Fish who don't understand bet sizing may make very small bets relative to the pot or, conversely, place unnecessarily large bets.

Important Information

  • It's important to identify the fish. By exploiting their play style, you can maximize your profits. For example, when playing against a fish who calls too much, you should focus on making large bets to extract value when you have a strong hand.
  • "Fish" can become an insult to others, so be careful when using it.

Examples of Term Usage

"This table has a lot of fish, so it seems like it'll be easy to win today."
