Float

★★

Basic Definition

A float in poker refers to a play where you call a bet from your opponent even when your hand isn't strong, with the aim of taking the pot on later streets.

Specific Situation

  • On the flop, the opponent made a continuation bet, but with a board of Ac7d3h and my hand being QhJh, I decided to float and watch the opponent's actions on the turn and beyond to set up a bluff.
  • With a flop of 8s6d2c and the opponent betting, if you have a hand of 9hTh and a gutshot straight draw, you might float and aim to complete the draw on the turn or later.

Important Information

  • In poker, position is crucial. Without a good position, it becomes difficult to play advantageously in later streets, so you should proceed with caution.
  • If the opponent is likely to have a very tight and strong hand, you should avoid floating as it becomes riskier.

Examples of Term Usage

"The opponent made a small continuation bet on the flop, so I decided to float and see how things unfold on the turn."
