Gapper

★★

Basic Definition

A "gap" refers to two cards that are one rank apart. For example, 8h6s or Jd9c fall into this category. While these cards have the potential to form a straight, they are considered to have a "gap" because the numbers are not consecutive.

Specific Situation

  • When your hand is 9d7h and the flop is 8s5c2d, drawing one more 6 will complete a straight. In this way, gappers are often used when aiming for a straight.
  • If your hand is QsTc and a J comes on the flop, it fills the gap, making it easier to complete a straight.

Important Information

  • While a gapper has the potential to form a straight, it is less likely to complete a straight compared to a connector due to the gap, so caution is needed during play.
  • Some gappers (e.g., KhJs) not only fill the gap but also have high potential due to their high-ranking cards. It's important to play flexibly, taking this into consideration.

Examples of Term Usage

"A gapper hand has the potential to complete a straight, but participating from an early position is risky."
