GTD
Basic Definition
GTD stands for "guaranteed." It is the minimum prize pool a tournament promises to pay out, no matter how many players register. A "$10K GTD" tournament pays at least $10,000 in total prizes.
Specific Situation
- A $100 tournament advertises "$10,000 GTD." Only 80 players enter, so buy-ins add up to $8,000 (ignoring fees). The organizer adds the missing $2,000.
- If 150 players enter instead, the prize pool is $15,000 and the guarantee doesn't matter.
Important Information
- The money the organizer adds when the guarantee isn't met is called an "overlay." For players, an overlay is extra value.
- The guarantee usually refers to the prize pool after the rake or entry fee is taken out.
Examples of Term Usage
"The $50K GTD tournament had a huge overlay because so few people registered."
