Hand reading

★★

Basic Definition

Hand reading refers to the process in poker of analyzing an opponent's actions and the board situation to infer the possible hands they might have. The goal is to predict the opponent's strength and next moves, thereby optimizing your own play.

Specific Situation

  • If the opponent makes a 3-bet pre-flop and the flop comes AhKd7s, it can be inferred that the opponent is likely to have a strong hand.
  • One of the skills of hand reading is identifying biases in your opponent's strategy to narrow down their hand.

Important Information

  • In hand reading, it's important to consider the opponent's playing style (tight/loose, aggressive/passive) and their position.
  • It's rare to be able to predict the opponent's hand with complete accuracy, so you must consider various possibilities.
