Basic Definition
A high card refers to a hand in poker where no combinations like pairs or straights are formed, and the outcome is determined by the highest-ranking card. This is the weakest hand in poker.
Specific Situation
- With a hand of A9 and a board of 752J3, the best hand is an Ace high card.
- In the case of the same high card, the next highest card (kicker) is compared to determine the winner. For example, on a board of KQ432, A9 is a stronger hand than A8.
Important Information
- Since a high card is a very weak hand, it's important not to force a bet in situations where other players are likely to have stronger hands.
- When both players have the same high card, the outcome is determined by the kicker, so hands with strong kickers are more valuable.
Examples of Term Usage
"My hand is likely losing to a high card, so I'll try to bluff and make my opponent fold."
