Indifferent

☆☆Indifferent,ID

Basic Definition

Indifferent refers to a situation in poker where, under certain conditions, choosing either action does not change the expected value (EV). This concept is particularly used in relation to GTO (Game Theory Optimal strategy).

Specific Situation

  • A hand with multiple action frequencies is essentially in a state of indifference between those actions.
  • A typical example of indifference is when you have a bluff catcher (a hand meant to catch the opponent's bluff) and the expected values of calling and folding are adjusted to be equal from a GTO perspective.

Important Information

  • To properly understand this situation, detailed calculations based on the opponent's range (the range of possible hands) and bet size are necessary. It may be a bit challenging for beginners, but you can gradually grasp it as you learn GTO strategy.
  • In an indifferent situation, where any action chosen does not alter long-term gains or losses, it is strategically important to anticipate the opponent's moves and consider the metagame when making decisions.

Examples of Term Usage

"This hand is probably indifferent according to GTO, so I'll decide whether to call or fold based on reading the opponent's betting frequency."
