Induce

☆☆

Basic Definition

Induce refers to a passive play in poker aimed at provoking a specific action from an opponent, such as a bluff or value bet. It typically involves using your own hand or the board situation to lead the opponent into making a mistaken decision.

Specific Situation

  • When you have a strong hand (like a set) on the turn, choose to check to make your opponent think "I'm weak," and induce a bet from them on the river.
  • When facing an opponent who bluffs excessively and you have a medium-strength hand (such as a middle pair), you can choose to call to draw out their aggressive bets and induce an even bigger bluff on the turn.

Important Information

  • To successfully induce, you need to accurately understand what kind of player your opponent is (for example, whether they tend to bluff a lot).
  • To mislead your opponent, it's important to defy their expectations with your play line, but be cautious as there's also a risk of them reading your hand.

Examples of Term Usage

"I chose to check on the river to induce a bluff, and as expected, they made a bet, making it easy for me to catch them."
