Isolate

★★

Basic Definition

An "isolate" is a poker strategy where you target a specific player to reduce the number of opponents and create a one-on-one situation (heads-up). It mainly refers to raising against a player who has limped in.

Specific Situation

  • When you're in the button position and a non-aggressive player limps in, if you have AhQc, you should raise to isolate and create a situation where it's difficult for other players to join.
  • If you are in the cutoff position and a weak-looking player limps in while you have KhJs, you can isolate and target that player.

Important Information

  • When isolating, position is crucial. If there's a possibility that a player behind you might three-bet, you need to make a careful decision.
  • It's important to choose an appropriate bet size by considering the opponent's play style (loose or tight) and the strength of your own hand.

Examples of Term Usage

"I targeted the limping player and raised to 5BB to isolate."
