Kicker

★★

Basic Definition

A kicker in poker refers to a card used to determine the winner when players have the same hand. Specifically, when players with the same hand compete, the highest-ranking card not involved in the hand becomes important.

Specific Situation

  • With a hand of Ah8d and a board of AcQs4h7s2d, you have top pair (a pair of Aces). In this case, your kicker is 8d, and if your opponent has AsKd, you would lose on the kicker.
  • With the board showing KhKd3s9c7d and you holding QsJc, if your opponent has QhTc, both have a Q-high, but you win with the kicker because Jc is higher.

Important Information

  • The strength of the kicker is very important when competing with the same hand. Especially in high card or pair hands, the kicker often determines the outcome.
  • To prevent losing due to a kicker, it's important to participate with strong-ranked cards pre-flop. Proceeding with a weak kicker increases the risk.

Examples of Term Usage

"The opponent also had a pair of Aces, but I won due to having a stronger kicker."
