Kicker
Basic Definition
A kicker in poker refers to a card used to determine the winner when players have the same hand. Specifically, when players with the same hand compete, the highest-ranking card not involved in the hand becomes important.
Specific Situation
- With a hand of A8 and a board of AQ472, you have top pair (a pair of Aces). In this case, your kicker is 8, and if your opponent has AK, you would lose on the kicker.
- With the board showing KK397 and you holding QJ, if your opponent has QT, both have a Q-high, but you win with the kicker because J is higher.
Important Information
- The strength of the kicker is very important when competing with the same hand. Especially in high card or pair hands, the kicker often determines the outcome.
- To prevent losing due to a kicker, it's important to participate with strong-ranked cards pre-flop. Proceeding with a weak kicker increases the risk.
Examples of Term Usage
"The opponent also had a pair of Aces, but I won due to having a stronger kicker."
