Late Position

★★LP

Basic Definition

Late position in poker refers to positions where you act later in the betting order. Typically, this includes the CO (cutoff) and the BTN (button). Because you can make decisions after seeing other players’ actions, these positions are considered informationally advantageous. It is also often abbreviated as “LP.”

Specific Situation

  • If you are on the button (BTN), you can create an advantageous situation by betting after all other players have checked.
  • When you are in the CO, even without a very strong hand, it becomes easier to apply aggressive plays such as steals.

Important Information

  • In late position, you can leverage positional advantage not only to play strong hands, but also to identify opponents’ weakness and execute bluffs.
  • However, becoming overly aggressive can lead to facing re-raises or having your strategy read by other players, so caution is required.

Examples of Term Usage

“In late positions like the BTN, it’s effective to watch your opponents’ actions before attempting a bluff.”
