Main pot

★★

Basic Definition

The main pot refers to the primary pot in a poker game that all players can participate in. Specifically, it is the pot created from the amounts bet by everyone, within the range that the player who went all-in can cover. Conversely, a pot that is created during an all-in situation, which only some players have the right to win, is called a "side pot."

Specific Situation

If Player A goes all-in with $100 and Players B and C each bet $200, the main pot will contain $300 ($100 x 3), which all players A, B, and C will compete for.

The remaining $200 (the additional bets placed by Player B and Player C) are not included in the main pot, and a separate side pot is created for this amount. Player A cannot participate in this side pot.

Important Information

The main pot is an opportunity for everyone to win, while the side pot is contested only among some players.

When multiple players go all-in with different amounts, a main pot and several side pots may be created. It is necessary to correctly determine the winner for each pot.

Examples of Term Usage

"If the player who went all-in with a short stack wins, the main pot goes to that player, but the side pot is claimed by someone else."
