MDF
★☆☆Minimum Defense Frequency
Basic Definition
MDF (Minimum Defense Frequency) refers to the minimum percentage you need to defend against an opponent's bet or raise in poker. Specifically, if an opponent bets an amount that is r times the pot, the MDF is 1/(1+r). This helps you determine whether you can appropriately respond to an opponent's aggression without folding too easily and incurring a loss. More precisely, it is defined as the call frequency that makes an opponent's hand with 0 equity indifferent between betting and checking.
Specific Situation
- If the opponent makes a bet of 50% of the pot, the Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF) is 67%.
- If the opponent makes a bet equal to 100% of the pot, the Minimum Defense Frequency (MDF) is 50%.
Important Information
- If you don't protect your MDF, you could easily be exploited if your opponent frequently bets.
- MDF is a theoretical value, and in actual play, you should adapt flexibly based on the strength of your hand and your opponent's play style. For example, if it's clear that your opponent is bluffing excessively, it can be effective to defend more than the MDF suggests.
Examples of Term Usage
"My opponent made a polarized pot-sized bet, so I'm planning to calculate the MDF and call 50% of the time."
