Middle position
Basic Definition
The middle position in poker refers to a seating position located between the early position (EP) and the late position (LP). Specifically, depending on the number of players at the table, it refers to the 2nd or 3rd seat at a 6-player table, and the 4th to 6th seats at a 10-player table. It is sometimes abbreviated as "MP."
Specific Situation
At a 9-player table, the fourth player is in the middle position. Although this player still has many actions left behind them, it is easier to observe the situation compared to being in an early position.
If a player in middle position faces a raise from a player in early position pre-flop, it's best to avoid calling.
Important Information
In the middle position, careful decision-making is required because there are still players behind you who can take action. You should especially consider the moves made in the early position and the playing style of the players behind you.
The middle position doesn't have as strict constraints as the early position, but it also doesn't have the information advantage of the late position. Therefore, it's important to appropriately adjust the range of hands you can play.
Examples of Term Usage
"You can open your range a bit wider from middle position than from early position, but you also need to account for the actions of the players behind you."
