Nut Straight

★★

Basic Definition

A nut straight in poker refers to the strongest possible straight that can be made at that point in the game. You won't lose unless your opponent completes a flush or a higher hand.

Specific Situation

  • With a board of 8h9sTd2c3c and a hand of JhQh, this straight (8-9-T-J-Q) is the nut straight. Even if other players have a straight, they cannot make a stronger one.
  • With a board of 4d5s6h7cJd and a hand of 8h9h, you complete a straight of 5-6-7-8-9, which is also the nut straight.

Important Information

  • Even if you have a nut straight, you need to be cautious because if the board is paired, you could lose to a full house or four of a kind.
  • When you have a nut straight, it's important to choose a bet size that maximizes your profit while considering the possible hands your opponent might have.

Examples of Term Usage

"I completed a nut straight on the river, so I could confidently call the opponent's all-in."
