Odds

★★

Basic Definition

Odds in poker refer to the probability expressed as a ratio in specific situations. This is used to determine strategically important information, such as pot odds and draw odds.

Specific Situation

  • When the flop is Th8h3d and your hole cards are QcJs, odds are used to calculate the probability of completing a gutshot straight draw. In this case, the odds of completing a flush on the turn are 43 to 4 (8.5%).
  • There is $100 in the pot, and if your opponent bets $50, the pot odds are approximately 3 to 1 (requiring a win rate of 25%). You can use this figure to decide whether to call.

Important Information

  • Odds are crucial when making decisions, as they combine pot odds (the ratio of the current pot size to the amount needed to call) and draw odds (the probability of drawing a specific card).
  • Even if you can't calculate the exact odds, you can make judgments based on approximate values. However, be cautious, as incorrect odds calculations can lead to losses.

Examples of Term Usage

"I decided to call until the turn because the odds for the flush draw were good."
