Offsuit

Review the meaning and basic rules of Offsuit, then learn how it is used in real poker situations.

Basic Definition

An offsuit refers to a situation where the two cards in your hand are of different suits. For example, a hand like AK would be considered offsuit because the suits are different. Since the suits differ, the likelihood of completing a flush is low. In hand notation, it is simply represented by "o."

Specific Situation

  • When your hand is AT, it is considered an "off-suit" hand because the suits are different. This is usually denoted as "ATo (Ace-Ten off-suit)."
  • With a hand of QJ and a flop of T92, a straight is possible, but a flush is not.

Important Information

  • Off-suit hands have a limited potential to form strong post-flop hands compared to suited hands (same suit). Therefore, even with cards of the same rank, they are often valued lower than suited hands.
  • Even with offsuit cards, it's quite possible to play if you have strong high cards or pairs, but the playability post-flop is relatively low.

Examples of Term Usage

"In the preflop, a marginal offsuit hand like QT should be folded depending on your position."
