Open
Basic Definition
In poker, "open" refers to the action of making the first raise (increasing the bet) when no one else has yet participated pre-flop. This is also known as an "open raise" and indicates an early aggressive move in the game.
Specific Situation
- You are in the button position and holding AK with no one else having entered the pot. Making the first raise here is called "opening."
- You are in early position with QQ and made the first pre-flop raise of 3BB. This action is referred to as an "open."
Important Information
- When opening, the raise amount is typically 2BB to 3BB, but adjustments may be necessary depending on the table situation and strategy.
- The choice of hands to open with varies depending on your position. For example, in an early position, stronger hands are recommended, while in a late position, you can widen your range a bit.
Examples of Term Usage
"When opening from an early position, you need to be careful in selecting your hands."
