Option
★★★
Basic Definition
An "option" refers to the right of the player in the big blind (BB) position to make an additional raise if everyone else has chosen to call or fold pre-flop. Normally, since the big blind has already made a forced bet, they can choose to check, but they also have the privilege to use this option to increase the pot.
Specific Situation
- If you are the big blind and all participants limp in, you can add more chips to raise. This action is referred to as "exercising the option."
- As the big blind, you can choose to check and see the flop or use the option to raise to 2BB or more.
Important Information
- When exercising an option, it's important to consider your opponent's range and the relative strength of your own hand. Forcing a raise with a weak hand increases the risk.
- By using options, you can increase the pot while putting pressure on your opponent, but be cautious as there's a possibility of being reraised after a raise.
Examples of Term Usage
"Everyone just called, so I used the option from the big blind to try and build up the pot."
