Out of position
★★☆Out of position, OOP
Basic Definition
Out of Position (OOP) refers to a disadvantageous position in poker where you must act before your opponent. It is the opposite of In Position (IP). Being in a bad position means you cannot make your decision after seeing your opponent's actions, putting you at an informational disadvantage.
Specific Situation
- When you are in the big blind and your opponent is on the button, you will always need to act first after the pre-flop, putting you in an out-of-position (OOP) situation.
- The post-flop positions are, in order, OOP ← [SB, BB, UTG, ..., HJ, CO, BTN] → IP.
Important Information
- When you're out of position, you need to play carefully. If you make reckless moves, your opponent can easily take advantage of you.
- A strategy to control the pot is important. It is recommended to use checks or small bets to keep the pot size in check and minimize risk.
Examples of Term Usage
"This hand is strong, but since I'm out of position, I'll check and see how things go."
