Overcard
Basic Definition
An overcard refers to a hole card that is of a higher rank than the highest-ranked card on the board. This can help determine whether your hand might be stronger than your opponent's.
Specific Situation
- With a flop of 852 and hole cards of AQ, both A and Q are overcards, being higher in rank than 8. If your opponent hasn't hit, there's a very high chance you're winning.
- The flop is J74, and with a hand of KT, the K is an overcard, but the T is not.
Important Information
- If there is an overcard, the chances of a turnaround increase if the opponent has made a pair.
- It's risky to overvalue just overcards and continue playing. You need to observe the board situation and your opponent's actions, and make careful judgments.
Examples of Term Usage
"I didn't make a pair on the flop, but since I have an overcard A, I'll continue betting."
