Overpair

Basic Definition

An "overpair" is a term used in poker when your hole cards are a pocket pair, and the rank of that pair is higher than the highest card on the board. It is a type of strong hand and often represents a high probability of winning.

Specific Situation

  • With a flop of 862 and a hand of 99, the 99 is an overpair because it is a higher pair than the highest card on the board, 8.
  • When the flop is QJ7 and your hole cards are KK, the KK is an overpair because it is a higher pair than the highest card on the board, Q.

Important Information

  • Overpairs are considered very strong hands, especially when you've raised pre-flop, but you need to be cautious if the board is dangerous, such as when there's a possibility of a straight or flush.
  • Even if you have an overpair, on a wet board, you need to play carefully by considering your opponent's actions and bet sizes. Overconfidence can lead to being outplayed.

Examples of Term Usage

"I made an overpair on the flop, so I decided to bet more aggressively on the turn to apply pressure."
