Basic Definition

A pocket pair in poker refers to a situation where the two hole cards dealt to a player are of the same rank (number). For example, when you have two cards of the same number, like or , you are said to have a "pocket pair."

Specific Situation

If your hand is , this is the strongest pocket pair, known as "Aces," and it's standard to bet or raise aggressively pre-flop.

If your hand consists of , you have the weakest pocket pair, known as "deuces," and depending on the situation, folding might be considered. However, aiming for a set (three of a kind) by cheaply seeing the flop is also a viable strategy.

Important Information

The strength of pocket pairs largely depends on the rank of the pair. Higher-ranked pairs are more powerful and have a higher win rate pre-flop.
