Polarize
Basic Definition
Polarization refers to a situation where there are no moderately strong hands, and the range is skewed towards either very strong or very weak hands. Betting with such a range is called a "polarized bet," characterized by high bet amounts. It is an effective strategy for gaining a lot of chips with strong hands.
Specific Situation
- When you have the nuts on the river, you try to get the maximum number of chips by making a polarized bet.
On a river with a one-card straight board like

, you can polarize your bets with a straight (value) hand like
and an ace-high (bluff) hand like
to put your opponent in a difficult position.
Important Information
In situations where you use polarization, it's important to consider the type of player you're up against. Polarization may not be effective against easily readable opponents or beginners.
The number of bluff hands included in a polarized range needs to be aligned with pot odds and bet size. If there are too few bluffs, opponents will easily fold.
Examples of Term Usage
