Protection Bet
Basic Definition
A protection bet is a bet made to protect the equity of your hand. It is commonly used when you hold a medium-strength hand on a wet board (a board with strong straight or flush possibilities). By betting, you worsen the odds for your opponent’s drawing hands and protect your equity. It is important to note that this is different from a "block bet."
Specific Situation
- When the flop is

and your hand is
, you have top pair, but the board is wet. In this situation, you make a protection bet to avoid letting your opponent complete their draw cheaply.
- When the flop is

and your hand is
, you have top pair along with a backdoor flush draw. You make a protection bet to discourage your opponent’s straight or flush draws.
Important Information
- The size of a protection bet is crucial. If it is too small, you allow your opponent to complete their draw at a low cost; if it is too large, you risk investing too many chips unnecessarily. Choosing an appropriate sizing is essential.
- The goal of protection is to preserve your winning equity, so it is not always necessary to make your opponent fold. The key is to narrow your opponent’s range and create a situation where your equity can be maintained.
Examples of Term Usage
“Since it was a wet board, I made a protection bet on the flop with a medium-strength hand.”
