Second hit

Basic Definition

A second hit refers to having the second strongest pair against the board.

Specific Situation

  • If the flop is Kh9d5s and your hand is Qd9h, it counts as a second pair. In this case, the top pair is a pair of Kings.
  • If the flop is Jc7h3s and your hand is Th7d, it counts as a second hit. A top hit would be a pair of Jacks.

Important Information

  • A second hit can become a strong hand depending on the opponent's range and actions, but it needs to be played carefully. Especially if the opponent is making strong bets, be wary of a top hit or even stronger hands.
  • If you make unnecessary raises or large bets on a second hit, you increase the risk of losing with a weak hand.
