Semi-bluff

★★

Basic Definition

A semi-bluff refers to a play where you bet or raise with a currently weak hand that has the potential to improve on the turn or river. It aims not only to make your opponent fold but also holds the possibility of improving your hand in later streets to win.

Specific Situation

  • The flop is 9h8s2d, and your hand is AhJh. At this point, you haven't hit a top pair, but if a heart appears on the turn or river, you'll complete a flush. By raising or betting, you might force your opponent to fold, or you could end up with a strong hand on later streets.
  • The flop is Ts9c3d, and your hand is QsJs. This hand currently has a low winning chance, but if an 8 or K appears on the turn or river, you'll complete a straight. In this situation, you can make a semi-bluff.

Important Information

  • A semi-bluff needs to be executed with consideration of the opponent's strategy. If the opponent frequently calls, a semi-bluff is less likely to succeed.

Examples of Term Usage

"I'm thinking of semi-bluffing this hand because there's a chance of drawing a heart on the turn."
