Basic Definition

A "short stack" refers to a situation in a tournament where a player's chip count is lower than that of other players, or it can refer to the player themselves. Generally, a player is considered to have a short stack when they have 20 big blinds (BB) or fewer.

Specific Situation

  • In the middle of the tournament, if your stack is only 10BB and many other players have over 30BB, you are considered short-stacked.
  • In a cash game, if you only have 50BB while other players at the table have more than 200BB, you are also referred to as a short stack.

Important Information

  • In short stack strategy, it is recommended to carefully select your hands and generally choose between going all-in or folding.
  • With a short stack, the proportion of chips to the pot becomes significant, so it's important to take aggressive actions.

Examples of Term Usage

"I'm short-stacked, so I need to figure out the right time to push soon."
