Under the Gun (UTG)

★★★Under the gun, UTG

Basic Definition

Under the Gun (UTG) refers to the position immediately after the Big Blind (BB) in poker. This position is considered disadvantageous because it requires the first action pre-flop.

Specific Situation

  • In a tournament, the player seated in the UTG position must decide their action first, carefully considering options like raising or folding.
  • When a player in the UTG position has a weak hand like 7d6c, folding is often the appropriate choice.

Important Information

  • In UTG, because the position is very disadvantageous, you need to choose your hands carefully. Generally, you should only take action with strong hands.
  • Since you act first, it's difficult to read other players' moves, and having a poor position increases the risk. It's important to play with this understanding.

Examples of Term Usage

"I raised from the UTG position, but a player behind me re-raised, so I have to play very carefully."
