Value bet

★★★Value

Basic Definition

A value bet refers to a bet made when you believe your hand is stronger than your opponent's, with the expectation that your opponent will call. The goal is to gain additional profit from your strong hand. It is the opposite of a bluff bet, which is made with the intention of making your opponent fold.

Specific Situation

  • A bet made with the intention of getting a call from hands like 9d7d that your opponent might have, when you hold KhKc and the board is Ks7h2d9c3s, is considered a value bet.
  • When the board is QcJs8h2d5c and you have AhQh, holding the top pair, you might make a value bet expecting a call from a weaker top pair like Qd9d.

Important Information

  • The size of a value bet needs to be set carefully. If the amount is too high, weaker hands will find it difficult to call, and if it's too low, you might not make enough profit.
  • You should not make a value bet when there's a high chance you're losing to your opponent if called. You'll end up losing chips one-sidedly.

Examples of Term Usage

"I read that my opponent had two pairs on the river, so I tried making a small value bet."
