Value bet

Review the meaning and basic rules of Value bet, then learn how it is used in real poker situations.

Basic Definition

A value bet refers to a bet made when you believe your hand is stronger than your opponent's, with the expectation that your opponent will call. The goal is to gain additional profit from your strong hand. It is the opposite of a bluff bet, which is made with the intention of making your opponent fold.

Specific Situation

  • A bet made with the intention of getting a call from hands like 97 that your opponent might have, when you hold KK and the board is K7293, is considered a value bet.
  • When the board is QJ825 and you have AQ, holding the top pair, you might make a value bet expecting a call from a weaker top pair like Q9.

Important Information

  • The size of a value bet needs to be set carefully. If the amount is too high, weaker hands will find it difficult to call, and if it's too low, you might not make enough profit.
  • You should not make a value bet when there's a high chance you're losing to your opponent if called. You'll end up losing chips one-sidedly.

Examples of Term Usage

"I read that my opponent had two pairs on the river, so I tried making a small value bet."
