Raise first in
Glossary
RFI
Basic Definition
RFI stands for "raise first in": opening the pot with a raise when everyone before you has folded. An RFI range is the set of hands you open from each position.
Specific Situation
- In a 6-max game, UTG, the hijack and the cutoff fold, and you raise to 2.5 big blinds on the button. That's an RFI from the button.
- An "RFI chart" shows which hands to open from UTG, HJ, CO, BTN and SB when the action folds to you.
Important Information
- RFI ranges get wider the later your position, because fewer players are left to act behind you. UTG opens tight, and the button opens much wider.
- RFI only covers unopened pots. If someone has already raised, you are deciding whether to 3-bet, call or fold, which is a different chart.
- You can look up opening ranges for every position in our free preflop range charts.
Examples of Term Usage
"My RFI range on the button is close to 45% of hands, but from UTG it's much tighter."
